Manga one-shot karya Naoki Urasawa, menceritakan sepasang ayah dan anak yg diutus melakukan misi pencurian di Museum Louvre setelah usahanya mengalami kebangkrutan。 Manga Naoki Urasawa pertama yg kubaca, cukup menarik tapi g terlalu special。 Berekspektasi terlalu tinggi diawal, aku kira ceritanya bakal berat, penuh misteri, detektif2 an, tapi ternyata cukup ringan & masih bisa diikuti。 Ada sedikit twist jg di akhir cerita。"Mimpi yang tidak divisualisasikan, tidak akan pernah terwujud。 Hanya mimp Manga one-shot karya Naoki Urasawa, menceritakan sepasang ayah dan anak yg diutus melakukan misi pencurian di Museum Louvre setelah usahanya mengalami kebangkrutan。 Manga Naoki Urasawa pertama yg kubaca, cukup menarik tapi g terlalu special。 Berekspektasi terlalu tinggi diawal, aku kira ceritanya bakal berat, penuh misteri, detektif2 an, tapi ternyata cukup ringan & masih bisa diikuti。 Ada sedikit twist jg di akhir cerita。"Mimpi yang tidak divisualisasikan, tidak akan pernah terwujud。 Hanya mimpi yang diharapkan, yang akan terwujud。" 。。。more

The pacing on this graphic novel is strange。。。 I felt like every part either felt rushed or too slow, like all the wrong parts were given the attention。 Overall the art quality was amazing though and I did enjoy the read。

I'm always a fan of Urasawa's work, and this was no exception。 Starting in Japan with a family in debt, it quickly changes focus to art stealing and a traveling to a whole new country for the father and daughter。 The cast of quirky characters is always a delight and I enjoyed this as the short read it is。 I recommend it if you enjoyed some of his other work, especially Master Keaton。 I'm always a fan of Urasawa's work, and this was no exception。 Starting in Japan with a family in debt, it quickly changes focus to art stealing and a traveling to a whole new country for the father and daughter。 The cast of quirky characters is always a delight and I enjoyed this as the short read it is。 I recommend it if you enjoyed some of his other work, especially Master Keaton。 。。。more

An exceptional read。 Stands on it's own in the many brilliant Urasawa works, but also a great companion to his short story collection Sneeze (recently collected), but whereas the short stories are set throughout his career, Mujirushi released in (2017-2018) and shows that he's still got that magic touch that made me love his previous works, regardless of genre。Heartfelt, thoughtful and uses an unbelievable character crossover that makes this book unique, even in Urasawa's outstanding library of An exceptional read。 Stands on it's own in the many brilliant Urasawa works, but also a great companion to his short story collection Sneeze (recently collected), but whereas the short stories are set throughout his career, Mujirushi released in (2017-2018) and shows that he's still got that magic touch that made me love his previous works, regardless of genre。Heartfelt, thoughtful and uses an unbelievable character crossover that makes this book unique, even in Urasawa's outstanding library of works。 Essentially a 9 chapter mini-series, so the tone does shift a bit (early chapters are somewhat subdued), but while I was bracing for something like "Monster" it artfully pivoted to be more like "Master Keaton" (my favourite of Urasawa's works)。 The overall plot is more interconnected than I gave it credit for and it's various story threads tie together beautifully。 In terms of humour, it takes the zany and hilarious to new heights with some political prodding (this was released in 2017-2018), but whether that angers or upsets you, is only because you don't want to be reminded of the political turmoil of the last few years。 Fortunately, it's very quick and doesn't distract from the strengths of the book。 Besides, it's hard to have anything but a smile when seeing a character like Iyami on the page, and while I've never tried the series he's from (Osomatsu-kun), but it's not needed。 Here he's given depth and connection to the narrative which make him more fleshed out than any description I've read of him。 Could even be a completely different backstory, but it still leaves it open to interpretation (Hint: Note the Norse story of Hunin and Munin)。If you've enjoyed this please try his other works: Master Keaton, Monster, Pluto, 20th Century Boys, Sneeze: Short Story Collection and recent Asadora!。 Next up for me is his previous crossover/revival of Tezuka's Pluto, to see if his care for other creator's characters holds true。 。。。more

I haven’t read as much manga as I have with western comics, but if there is one manga artist that I would consider as my favourite in the field, Naoki Urasawa reigns supreme。 From Monster to Pluto to 20th Century Boys (the latter of which I’m currently reading), Urasawa is known for ongoing narratives that often explored the darker aspects of humanity and yet is able to create a tone that isn’t always dour。 Urasawa has certainly shown a lighter side as seen in Sneeze, his collection of short sto I haven’t read as much manga as I have with western comics, but if there is one manga artist that I would consider as my favourite in the field, Naoki Urasawa reigns supreme。 From Monster to Pluto to 20th Century Boys (the latter of which I’m currently reading), Urasawa is known for ongoing narratives that often explored the darker aspects of humanity and yet is able to create a tone that isn’t always dour。 Urasawa has certainly shown a lighter side as seen in Sneeze, his collection of short stories。 So what tone does Mujirushi: The Sign of Dreams presents?Luck is not on young businessman Kamoda’s side, especially when he decides to cheat on his taxes in order to save money to take his wife on a luxury cruise, only for a surprise audit costs him both his business and his wife。 On the brink of suicide, Kamoda and his daughter Kasumi are led by a crow and a mysterious symbol to the France Research Institute, where they meet the flamboyant Director, a man who claims he can change Kamoda's fate with a daring painting heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris。More in the realm of a crime caper, Urasawa aims for something lighter, though he doesn’t negate the sad situation that Kamoda and Kasumi are in from the beginning。 Kamoda, in particular, is in a depressed state and is willing to take his own life, leaving behind his young but strong-minded daughter。 However, with the sudden appearance of the Director, a possibility of hope shines upon Kamoda, though Kasumi suggests otherwise。The Director himself is actually the character Iyami from Fujio Akatsuka's classic comedy manga Osomatsu-kun, hence this manga crediting Akatsuka's Fujio Productions Ltd。 with cooperation。 This was a character who was so popular and influential in the mid-sixties in Japan, but despite my long interest in Japanese pop culture, even thus guy flew by me。 In the context of Mujirushi, the Director is a mixture of mystery and flamboyance, and whilst he is not the main focus, his presence represents a recurring strange warmth that has been throughout Urasawa’s work。There are elements that are reminiscent of Urasawa’s previous manga, such as an old-timer policeman who is edging towards retirement and the author’s continuing fascination towards Europe。 However, despite the stakes of the heist as well as some strong characterisation towards the international cast, the story itself for all its silly extravagance, is somewhat flimsy where everything seems weirdly resolved too quickly, including a subplot involving the female American president looking a lot like the current actual one。As always, Urasawa’s artwork is just as exquisite as the art displayed in the Louvre, of which he takes artistic advantage, from the various paintings to the objects from numerous periods of history。 As rich his backgrounds are, my favourite aspect of Urasawa’s illustrations is the expressive characters that look distinct from one another, not just through their respected nationalities。 As random as the President Beverly Duncan subplot is, Urasawa finds humour in drawing the Trump-like sensibilities of this character。Although this doesn’t rank among the brilliance of Urasawa’s most significant work, Mujirushi: The Sign of Dreams is a fun crime caper that is all about fulfilling one’s dreams under intense pressure。 。。。more

This is a bit odd, almost sinking under the weight of all the things going on here。First, this is part of the Louvre collection of graphic novels, which commissions artists from around the world to create stories inspired by the French museum and/or its contents。Having taken up the baton, Naoki Urasawa decided to combine his Louvre tale with a homage to a 1960s Japanese manga series, Osomatsu-kun。 I at least had a passing familiarity with Astro boy when he did a similar thing with PLUTO: Urasawa This is a bit odd, almost sinking under the weight of all the things going on here。First, this is part of the Louvre collection of graphic novels, which commissions artists from around the world to create stories inspired by the French museum and/or its contents。Having taken up the baton, Naoki Urasawa decided to combine his Louvre tale with a homage to a 1960s Japanese manga series, Osomatsu-kun。 I at least had a passing familiarity with Astro boy when he did a similar thing with PLUTO: Urasawa x Tezuka, Volume 001。 This time though I had never heard of the series or the side character, Iyama, who is featured here, so that whole aspect was lost on me。 Also, it's weird and discomforting that Iyami's character design looks exactly like the offensive and racist caricatures from World War II comic books and propaganda that we routinely condemn today。Homage is also paid to Maria Callas, the opera singer, just because, in a way that will be lost on non-Japanese speakers until it is explained in the back of the book。Finally, for a villain, Urasawa horrifically decides to mash 2016 rivals Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump together, giving us orange-skinned, pant-suit-wearing U。S。 President Beverly Duncan。 Brrr。In between all this baggage, he does manage to squeeze a sweet story about a little Japanese girl trying to help her father navigate a midlife crisis as his business verges on bankruptcy, his wife leaves him, and his only way out seems to be an outrageous art heist plot being offered by a mysterious stranger。 It's confusing at times, but if you lay a Coen brothers vibe over it, it sort of works。 。。。more
